Certification
Certification is the process by which a third party rating agency inspects and physically tests a new or renovated property to verify that it meets or exceeds the specific requirements of the certifying agency and/or program.

Energy Star New Homes
Energy Star New Homes is a program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that is designed to make new homes 20% to 30% more energy efficient than standard new homes built to code. The program is focused on improving insulation, increasing the efficiency of heating and cooling systems and reducing the electrical consumption of lighting and appliances. This is the most popular third party certification program and it also serves as a required component in most other green certification programs.

NAHB Green
NAHB Green is a program run by the National Association of Home Builders which was started in 2008 to provide builders and remodelers with a national green home certification system. The program allows for certification to four different performance levels - Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Emerald, thereby allowing the builder and homeowner to tailor the program's requirements to fit their needs.

LEED for Homes
LEED for Homes is a program run by the US Green Building Council, a non-profit organization that has been instrumental in promoting green building practices since 2000. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building certification system that can be applied to all types of properties - commercial, institutional and residential. This program is considered the premier green home certification standard. |
